New Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College Calls for Stronger Ties to Industry

The Weill Cornell Medical College, in New York, has chosen Laurie H. Glimcher, a Harvard University immunologist with extensive ties to two pharmaceutical companies, Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb, as its new dean. Dr. Glimcher will take over in January from Antonio M. Gotto Jr., whose own industry connections made headlines a couple years ago, when he was found to be among a group of 14 university-affiliated physicians paid by Merck as part of its plan to promote its controversial anticholesterol drug Vytorin. Dr. Glimcher has said she wants to strengthen university-industry relations, telling The New York Times: “There should be no silos between all of these different strengths.”
