The National Collegiate Athletic Association said Tuesday that it would sanction Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for wrongly saying that 97 athletes were academically eligible to play in intercollegiate contests in all 14 of the university’s sports over a four-year period. NCAA officials also said that the university had failed to monitor and control its athletic programs, and that a former academic adviser had refused to cooperate with the NCAA investigation. The Associated Press reported that the NCAA would put the university on probation for three years and would require the university to decrease the number of athletic scholarships it offers. Tne NCAA will also vacate a number of victories by the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the volleyball team. The university noted in a statement that it had discovered the eligibility discrepancies itself in 2007 and had also proposed the penalties itself.
