The NCAA has placed East Carolina University on probation for one year and declared three athletes there permanently ineligible after finding that a women’s tennis player wrote papers for four baseball players, who submitted the work as their own. The female athlete, who was employed by the university as a tutor, as well as two of the baseball players, who provided misleading information about their involvement in the academic fraud, are no longer eligible to compete. In addition, the university must vacate victories from the baseball and women’s tennis programs. The case was handled through the NCAA’s summary-disposition process, in which the NCAA and the university agree on the facts in the case and the penalties imposed.
