N.Y. Higher Education Takes 10% Cut in Cuomo’s Budget

February 1, 2011, 1:40 pm

Following through on his promise to close New York’s $10-billion budget gap without raising taxes, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, has proposed a budget that cuts overall state spending by nearly 3 percent. Appropriations for higher education, including the State and City University of New York systems and aid to private colleges, would fall 10 percent under the proposal. The governor is also reviving a proposal for SUNY to “to streamline its procurement processes” and to provide the system with “greater flexibility to engage in public-private partnerships.” In presenting the budget proposal, Governor Cuomo also said he opposed a tuition increase at the state’s public colleges.

Returning to my beloved governor (for whom I voted somewhat reluctantly): education always appears to take relatively large hits even while those who give those hits praise the values of education and (usually quite rightly) demand better performance from students.
