Most of 2011′s Biggest Gifts to Nonprofits Went to Universities

Universities received eight of the 12 largest gifts to nonprofit organizations in the United States in 2011, according to a tally released today by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The donations, part of a surge in megagifts this year, include $350-million for Cornell University from Charles F. Feeney; $265-million for Carnegie Mellon University and $125-million for the University of Pittsburgh from the late William S. Dietrich II; and two pledges for the University of Southern California, $200-million from David and Dana Dornsife and $110-million from John and Julie Mork.
