Montana State U. Professor Resigns in Wake of Sexual-Harassment Investigation

October 6, 2011, 10:44 am

Montana State University at Bozeman’s orchestra conductor, Shuichi Komiyama, a tenured professor, has resigned, according to The Bozeman Daily Chronicle, in the wake of a university investigation that concluded he had engaged in a sexual relationship with a female student that violated gender-bias and sex-harassment policies. Mr. Komiyama, who had denied the allegations, declined to comment to the newspaper about his resignation.

Usually one resigns under these conditions WHEN the institution agrees to close the investigation and drop the charges, essentially brushing the issue away and creating a “clean slate” situation.  I do hope that MSU did not do that. It would be grossly unfair to the female student.  If it was unwanted sex, Mr Komiyama should go to jail

Fine.  And if it were mutual, perhaps in these times, Big Brother’s (and Big Sister’s) Anti-Sex League could just limit themselves to the punishment given to Abelard….

Can this article possibly be any more vague?  For actual facts regarding, multiple student sex partners, a previous criminal record for sexual misconduct, and a registered sex offender, refer to the above citation.

Does MSU have a qualified personnel director who does background checks, criminal records check…?  I place the blame squarely on MSU for its failure to recognize that the person they interviewed, least of all hired had a long criminal history.  I expect/demand that multiple firings are forth coming after this egregious debacle.   What  dens of iniquity our universities have become.

Thank you tdb for your research. The entire scene is a sorry mess.  The fact that this could go on for two years with so much active conversation going on in the Music Department – and probably elsewhere on campus – without strong interventionary action on the part of the administration is, in itself, criminal.  You are correct, tdb, for MSU to be cleansed of this stain and stench, a considerable number of staff and faculty need to be seperated from the University (perhaps even the president) and Mr. Komiyams certainly should to be prosecuted.  His little game needs to be shut down permanently.

“Stain and stench…”, please! So, you want to castrate him (…shut down permanently) for a little lovin spoonful? Silly people.
