One is left to wonder in what ways Mr Gitlin opines that the Israeli government shows its supposed “contemptuous obduracy.”

To answer the title’s question:  highly unlikely.  Rarely, if ever, have ‘nonviolent’ movements achieved independence & freedom in and of themselves.  It is at best naive, and at worst, willfully ignorant, to think otherwise.
“If the Palestinian national movement had begun with disciplined nonviolence, it would have achieved statehood by now.”  I sincerely doubt it – the desire by jewish settlers to take the land has been overwhelming, and Israel was not, and is not, post-WWII Britain, slowly letting its colonial empire slip away …  Despite the work of many otherwise well-intentioned non-violent folk, the Israeli army & settlers have systematically taken over most of what used to be called Palestine:  they continue to this day to brush aside nonviolent protesters of all stripes as they continue the conquest.

Speaking of which – Indian/Pakistani independence was definitely =not= ‘nonviolent.’  Gandhi and a few followers may have used ‘nonviolence’ actions to gain attention to the struggle, but Britain did not grant independence solely because of Gandhian non-violence.  Please read up on the many very violent activities leading up to, and following, ‘independence,’ which, by the way, continues to this day.  Some may fear the North Korean rogue nukes, but I fear the Pakistani/Indian sabre-rattling with nukes.

Preparation for the meeting is really important. In chairing a meeting, I like to create some type of input assignment for the group to go out with the agenda a few days in advance, such as asking them to bring their written list of 10 priorities, ranked, or a list of 6-8 steps we could take to address an issue, with the pros and cons of each. While not everyone comes prepared, at least some will, and the discussion starts from this input.

Adequate notice and an accurate agenda are helpful.
