Marine Corps Cancels Plan to Slash Tuition Assistance

The U.S. Marine Corps has canceled a recent policy change that slashed its maximum tuition-assistance benefit by 80 percent, to $875 a year, financial analysts who follow the for-profit-college sector say. The decision, which could not be confirmed with the Defense Department on Wednesday, reportedly restores the maximum award to $4,500. The Defense Department is currently considering cutting tuition-assistance benefits across the services, but has not yet announced any reductions. The stock of American Public Education Inc., which operates the American Public University system and caters to veterans and service members, rose on the news of the Marine Corps’s reversal.
