In the face of major cuts to public colleges, Louisiana’s commissioner of higher education, Sally Clausen, has reduced her own compensation by nearly 53 percent, according to The Advocate, a newspaper in Baton Rouge. Ms. Clausen will forgo $178,000 in salary and $48,000 in car and housing allowances. State money for higher education has been cut by $280-million, or more than 20 percent, over the past 17 months.

Responsible leadership. Good for Sally. I always did like her.

Courageousand altruistic leadership at time of financial uncertainties across the nation. Wall Street should take notice.

I find nothing courageous or altruistic about it. It is symbolism at its worst. It comes to .08% of the deficit which is less than a rounding adjustment. If Ms. Clausen thinks she is worth that little she should perhaps move on.

Staticbird (#3), it’s not symbolism at all, as she made no attempt to publicize her gesture. The Advocate article indicates that it was discovered only by reviewing attachments to a state budget bill – hardly the way to go if she intended to bring attention to herself.

If $178,000 in salary and $48,000 in car/housing constituted 53% of the previous compensation, it amounted to $378,000 salary and $48,000 in car/housing. Her salary will be $200k after the cut.
