A top executive at the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District earned both sick pay from the district and, at the same time, a separate salary for teaching at a nearby community-college district, according to a report by the San Jose Mercury News. The revelation comes at a time when the San Jose/Evergreen district is facing economic hardship because of state budget cuts, and as a result students are being shut out of classes.

Any reason as to why the Chronicle has chosen not to publish the “executive”‘s name?Raza______________________Raza Khan, Ph.D., P.D.Carroll Community CollegeWestminster, MD

Odd, because the original article included it. There’s no link either — a couple are at http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_15443935 and http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/iteam&id=7516660.

Because the Chronicle is a “play nice” publication. Like the reporters covering the Wars, or Washington. Not rocking the boat is job one, news, information, etc. a distant second.

What part of recession, budget cuts, belt tightening, salary freezes, does this person not get? He or she needs to pay it all back with interest and lose his or her job. Then, the districts in the CA bay area need to establish better communication networks to make sure this type of activity is not some loophole for faculty! Anyone claiming sick time should not be working anywhere else for that matter and it should say so in their contracts.

and by the way, she happens to be the partner of the Chancellor of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District.

Bayinaah Jones has/had a Partner; the recently retired Chancellor at San Jose Evergreen Community College; Rosa Perez makes close to $300,000 a year plus perks, including a lot of travel. And often, she doesn’t travel alone.http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/iteam&id=7134922

The details of the total picture are given only piecemeal by several of the commenters above. Read the original report and you get a picture of someone showering their lover with a promotion and all sorts of inappropriate monetary “perks” at the same time that the system they worked in was crumbling from lack of funding. If this incident had involved a straight couple, I suspect that the response to the scandal would have been much more public and severe; Political “Correctness” indeed! And we wonder why so many in main-stream America – those folks whose tax dollars are being spent for all those lattes (see original article) – look on academia today with disgust and suspicion?

Thanks, grandpa24551. For a minute there I was worried that people who had not “brought over here as Slaves” would lie, cheat and steal. But now I am reassured that my people are invariably pure and incorruptible. Whew!

“recently retired Chancellor at San Jose Evergreen Community College; Rosa Perez makes close to $300,000 a year”Isn’t that more salary than is paid to a Senator or the President of the United States? “The annual salary of each senator, as of 2009, is $174000″ “The President of the United States earns $400000 a year. The vice president’s annual salary is $221100″________________First thought reading this article, “Could you image what it would be like to have this person for your boss?” -Better have asbestos clothing, because you are going to get burned!!! How does this come to be? It just seems fantastically corrupt, especially when one thinks down to the level of students taking on debt and paying tuition.
performance_expert2 - July 7, 2010 at 4:22 pm
Is this a civil matter or criminal matter? How does the Perez person manage to have such a huge salary?

Perez and Jones: Weren’t they the subject of an investigation noted in a previous CHE article: http://chronicle.com/blogPost/Community-College-Chief-May/24238/ ?

Ethically, how can they live with themselves?

Tip of the iceberg folks- California has been cursed with the dregs of higher education administrators for some years now- arrogant, aggressive, self centered, alpha-types with a sense of entitlement such as no so-called “welfare mother” could ever come close to expressing. Tin pot tyrants. Every three to five years we get a new one, first thing they do is rearrange the administrative structure so that they don’t have to actually do any work. They dump everything on the faculty and try to hire as many part timers as possible: no health benefits, no job security, low pay, and desperate. Easier to manipulate. They hire and promote brown nosers and spend college money on PR that makes them look good. @honore said it shorter and sweeter: “and we are surprised because…” There are no checks- college presidents are evaluated by the same boards that hired them, boards comprised of local wannabe politicos who couldn’t get elected dog catcher and have no experience or understanding of higher education. Do I sound bitter? Check out the investigation into these two sweethearts- they were both exonerated. The fancy trips were in fact business related. Flying first class is important for important people to arrive clean and fresh. The promotions for the partner, well, she met all the minimum qualifications, so what’s your problem? This misuse of sick leave, well, she’ll just be asked to repay it, and probably not even get a tap on the wrist. Then, she’ll go on to another high level administrative position, hired by some college board of trustees who wants a tough, business-model oriented president or chancellor.

Does one get the impression that women believe they should emulate the ‘sins’ of abuse in politics and education that men were accused and guilty of for many years ? This while going above and beyond their male predecessors in the depth of damage done to each system ?Women strove for equality which was sorely deserved, yet have now garnered sufficient negative attention in finding that same ‘ level playing field ‘. Seems that payback for decades of suppressed opportunities has now become an abundance of misconduct. When federal statutes of Title IX were forcedly imposed in the early seventies, men’s collegiate athletic programs suffered unparalleled loses due to shifting of financial support. This in many cases from men’s programs that had worked so hard to build success not only on fields and courts, but communities that supported them.In gaining equality of opportunity, women need be reminded that the ultimate classroom is that which demonstrates principles of equity at all times. Not lopsided liberal swapping of morals. Critic’ of women, African Americans, lesbians, gays, latinos should be in line with that of any other wrong-doer, not velvet-gloved allowances for any of those identifiers. If one is improper in their treatment of others, especially students affairs, as they are striving for achievements, the evaluation and meting out of justice need be swift and compensatory, and as harsh as the offenses.Prof Truthteller above really seems to have a clear picture of the situation endemic not only in ultra-liberal California, but in many other parts of the country. Men abused systems for years. Now women, African-Americans and Latinos feel enabled to do similar mis-deeds in a serf-serving greed mode. Is that how we achieve and build equalities America was founded on ?

It is not just CA – for example, look at the departing chancellor of Univ of WIS Colleges, and his ‘right hand’ man. State system and yet a job was created and person placed in it. Will be interesting to see if the same thing happens in his position as president in an Eastern location. And didn’t the Chronicle report a similar situation as this in WI just recently?
wiedmant - July 13, 2010 at 5:28 pm
Not knowing CA state law, maybe I’m off base. But if an educator claims to be too sick to work and collects sick pay — but is well enough to teach nearby — isn’t that called fraud? If a significant amount of state funds were collected under false pretenses, it sounds like a criminal offense to me.
