Kaplan College has surrendered its license to operate a dental-assistant program at its Charlotte, N.C., campus, and the company says it is paying “well over $1 million” on tuition refunds to about 200 former students of the program, The Charlotte Observer reported. Those steps came in the wake of complaints to state agencies alleging that Kaplan had misled students about the credentials they would earn. Janice Block, Kaplan’s chief national compliance officer, said there had been no attempt to mislead students, yet “a misunderstanding occurred.” The North Carolina Board of Community Colleges had been investigating the program but ended its inquiry after Kaplan asked to have its operating authority withdrawn, the newspaper said. A second investigation, by the state attorney general’s office, is continuing.
