U. of California Delays Vote on Raising Fees

The university’s Board of Regents joined California State University on Tuesday in delaying a controversial vote to raise fees on students. The increase would have affected UC students in professional-degree programs such as nursing, television, business, and public policy, raising their tuition by as much as 35 percent. The board postponed the vote at the request of Gov. Jerry Brown, who said he wanted more time to examine the proposal.


The actions come a week after voters approved Proposition 30 to raise taxes and avoid nearly $6 billion in cuts to public schools and higher education. CSU and UC each faced a $250 million cut if the measure had failed.
