U. of Louisville Gives Grawemeyer Award in Music to Dutch Composer

The university recognized Michel van der Aa with the $100,000 prize for Up-close, a 30-minute fusion of cello concerto and multimedia film. According to a news release from the university, “much is left unexplained” in the piece.


Van der Aa, 42, house composer for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, wrote the piece for Argentinian-French cellist Sol Gabetta and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The work, commissioned by the European Concert Hal Organization, premiered in Stockholm in 2011.
