Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, was arrested on Wednesday in an elaborate FBI sting operation after trying to destroy the Federal Reserve Bank of New York with what he thought was a 1,000-pound car bomb. Prosecutors said Mr. Nafis, a Bangladeshi citizen, came to the United States on a student visa in January. Officials at Southeast Missouri State University confirmed that he was enrolled in the spring 2012 semester, taking 12 credit hours and pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. He requested a transfer of his records in July and is no longer enrolled there. Kenneth W. Dobbins, the university’s president, said in a written statement on Thursday that his records had been transferred to an institution in Brooklyn, N.Y., though he did not specify which one. Mr. Dobbins said the university embraces its international students, “as they bring a global perspective to our students, our campus, and the surrounding communities.”

Hayes said the news came as a surprise to university officials.

“It certainly was, and we recruit international students, and they bring a lot to our campus, so it’s very unfortunate to hear this,” she said.
