Police Officer Is Convicted in 2010 U. of Maryland Beating Case

Two Prince George’s County police officers had been charged in the beating of a University of Maryland at College Park student during a basketball postgame celebration. On Friday a jury acquitted one of the officers of all charges; the other was found guilty of second-degree assault. The student, John J. McKenna, suffered a concussion and other injuries. He was initially charged with assaulting an officer, but those charges were dropped when videotape of the incident contradicted the officers’ claims.

(Updated, 10/21/2012, 6:24 p.m.) A lawyer for the Maryland student says Prince George’s County, Md., has agreed to pay $3.6-million in civil settlements to his client and nine other students and other people who were falsely arrested or physically assaulted in the incident, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.

After the trial, the student said he was “definitely glad that some justice has been done” but he hoped the Department of Justice would continue probing the case. Chief Mark Magaw of the Prince George’s County Police said that both officers would remain suspended with pay and would undergo administrative procedures to determine their future employment status.
