NCAA Adopts Tougher Sanctions for Programs That Break Rules
The changes adopted on Tuesday by the Division I Board of Directors will replace the long-held system of “major” and “secondary” rules violations with a four-level structure that seeks to focus on problems that pose the greatest threat to the association’s rules. Head coaches will also be more accountable for the actions of their assistants. The new rules, which critics have already questioned, take effect in 2013.
“We have sought all along to remove the ‘risk-reward’ analysis that has tempted people – often because of the financial pressures to win at all costs – to break the rules in the hopes that either they won’t be caught or that the consequences won’t be very harsh if they do get caught,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “The new system the Board adopted today is the result of a lot of hard work and membership input devoted to protecting the collegiate model.”
