First Defendant in Florida A&M U. Hazing Case Is Sentenced to 2 Years’ Probation

Brian Jones is the first of a dozen former members of the university’s marching band to be sentenced in connection with the hazing death of Robert Champion. The judge in the case had previously labeled Mr. Jones’s involvement in the incident as “rather minimal.” He’ll also be required to perform 200 hours of community service. The other band members charged in Mr. Champion’s death are awaiting trials next year.

During the court proceeding, Jones, 23, apologized to Champion’s parents, who had traveled from Georgia for the sentencing.

“Hazing is a completely inexcusable thing,” he said. “It went further than anybody thought … it would go.”
