John Sperling Is Retiring as the Apollo Group’s Chairman

John G. Sperling, who is 91, was in his 50s when he gave up a position as a tenured professor of history to run his new academic program for working adults. That operation became the University of Phoenix, which his company owns and which remains the nation’s largest for-profit college despite recent enrollment declines. Effective December 31, he will become the company’s chairman emeritus.


John G. Sperling, founder of the Apollo Group Inc., is retiring as executive chairman of the Phoenix company’s board and will be replaced by his son Peter, according to an 8-K filed today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Peter Sperling has held numerous management roles with Apollo, serving most recently as vice chairman.
