The incident took place at Hampden-Sydney College, a private institution in Virginia that is one of the few remaining all-male colleges in the United States. Christopher B. Howard, the college’s president, wrote in a letter to parents that a group of students shouted racial epithets and threw bottles outside the college’s minority-student union early Wednesday morning in response to the election results. The incident also included threats of physical violence. Mr. Howard, the college’s first African-American president, wrote that he was “terribly disappointed with the students who participated in this harmful, senseless episode including those men who stood idly by and watched it happen.” In a similar incident at the University of Mississippi, two people were arrested.
