September 22, 2010, 11:56 am

John R. Strassburger, president of Ursinus College from 1995 until this past summer, died today at the age of 68 after a long battle with prostate cancer, university officials said. Mr. Strassburger, a strong national voice on liberal education, spoke with The Chronicle as he prepared to step down last June, reflecting on his tenure and the future of liberal-arts colleges. The college plans to name a campus space the Strassburger Commons.

John will be missed. He was, indeed, a strong, informed and articulate voice for liberal arts education.

John was probably the best thing to happen to Ursinus in the last hundred years. A sad day for the college indeed.

I first met John Strassburger when he was an academic program officer at NEH, and I was a new academic dean seeking an NEH grant for our college. His kindness and assistance in pursuing our grant was exemplary. He will be remembered by many who knew him as a fine college president and as a wonderful person.

Very sorry to hear of President Strassburger’s passing. A lovely man, personable, intelligent, and a great credit to Ursinus College.

What a loss. He’ll be missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends, as well as with the students, faculty, and staff of Ursinus College.

The ranks of the good guys are smaller by one. President Strassburger was a great leader and better man.
