Iowa Attorney General Investigates Bridgepoint’s Ashford U.

Ashford University, a largely online for-profit institution with a small campus is Iowa, is being investigated by the Iowa attorney general for possible violations of the state’s Consumer Fraud Act, the agency and the institution’s parent company, Bridgepoint Education Inc., said this week. According to a filing by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the state agency has demanded that the company provide “documents and detailed information” about Ashford’s business practices since January 2008, a period that coincides with a rapid rise in the institution’s enrollment. A spokesman for the attorney general’s office would not say whether the probe, like those now under way in Kentucky and Florida, also involves other for-profit colleges.
