Indiana U. Dismisses Official Charged in Anti-Semitic Vandalism

Indiana University at Bloomington fired on Tuesday the campus official who was charged last week with an incident of anti-Semitic vandalism on the campus, according to a report by Channel 6 News, a local television station. The official, Mark Zacharias, who is 54, had supervised an honors-scholarship program on the campus since 2003. He was charged with a felony connected with a rock-throwing incident but has not been tied to other recent incidents of anti-Jewish vandalism in the area. The Associated Press was unable to obtain a comment about Mr. Zacharias’s dismissal from his lawyer.

  1. Wouldn’t it more legally prudent (and fair) to suspend him pending an actual legal trial in an actual court of law? If guilty, then dismiss, but if not then the man shouldn’t lose his job.

  2. if he was white with an incident of racist, there will be no actual legal trial in an actual court of law because the NAACP will just release a media statement.

  3. I agree with amnirov.

Maybe IU will pay Zacharias a severance, like the million dollars they paid Bobby Knight when he was finally fired after years of assaulting students.

  4. It does seem unfair to fire someone in advance of any kind of a formal hearing where the evidence is examined, particularly if they deny the charges. However, the most interesting part of this story is going to be what his motives were. This is a story that will be carefully watched by many people.
