Illinois Looks to Donations to Create Scholarships for Immigrants

August 1, 2011, 7:57 pm

A bill signed into law Monday by the governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, creates a scholarship program for legal and illegal immigrants without relying on taxpayer funds—the program will depend on private donations instead. To qualify for the scholarships, a students must have attended an Illinois high school for at least three years and have at least one immigrant parent. Governor Quinn, a Democrat, was quick to pledge $1,000 to the program, which will allow students to attend either public or private colleges in the state once enough money has been raised, the Associated Press reported.

Perhaps as they get older, they get most of their understanding of government from Fox News.

This seems like a disservice to the immigrants themselves. If they haven’t resolved their immigration status, why hook them even more into the domestic economy knowing they will have trouble staying? This is not helping; it’s hurting. It feels like a repeat of the “repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” debate, when Rachel Maddow fans thought they were helping gay soldiers, when in fact 85% of them didn’t want to come out of the closet, most DADT discharges were by gays who WANTED TO LEAVE the military, and the post-repeal world has less privacy but no enhanced anti-discrimination provisions to help gays now stuck in the armed forces.

Please, people, a bit of advice: When you’re feeling magnanimous and noblesse oblige calls, stop. Don’t say anything. Don’t help, don’t advise, don’t advocate, and most of all, don’t set up programs. When you’re most idealistic you are most dangerous. Just ask the families of gay soldiers who will end up committing suicide because they’ve been outed down range and can’t get discharged.
