Lawyers who seek continuing legal education credits in New York can now earn them through the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. This fall, FIRE, which defends students’ freedom of expression and publicizes what it sees as unconstitutional campus speech codes, will offer “Free Speech 101: Protecting Free Expression and the First Amendment at our Nation’s Colleges and Universities.” The one-day course, taught by the group’s director and associate director of legal and public advocacy, will “provide an overview of the law on free-speech rights at public and private universities, as established by the Supreme Court and lower courts, and discuss the ways in which universities violate this case law.”

So is it true that lawyers seeking continuing legal education credits are not required to earn them at an accredited institution?

The CLE is accredited through the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board. Participating attorneys will receive three CLE credits in the category of “Areas of Professional Practice.”
