Drew Gilpin Faust, the prize-winning Civil War historian and president of Harvard University, will deliver the annual Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities announced today. Ms. Faust, who has written six books, most recently The Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War (Knopf, 2008), will speak on the topic of “representations of war throughout history,” according to a news release issued by the endowment. The Jefferson Lecture, which carries a $10,000 honorarium, is the federal government’s most prestigious honor for scholars in the humanities. Ms. Faust will speak on May 2 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington.
