Game Over: Northeastern U. Spikes Its Football Program

November 23, 2009, 9:31 am

Northeastern University is eliminating its football program because it doesn’t want to spend money to improve the Division I team in the long run, The Boston Globe reported. Administrators and trustees said that bolstering the team, which has produced six consecutive losing seasons, would require spending millions of dollars on a new head coach, on recruiting, and on improving facilities. University officials, who insisted that the move was not connected to the recession, have not decided exactly how the program’s annual $3-million budget will be used instead, the Globe reported, but they said players on scholarship would keep their student aid and would be helped to transfer, if they wanted.

Congratulations to Northeastern for a smart and gutsy decision. Let’s hope some other schools will follow this example.

Ironic. If I have my history correct, Northwestern joined the Big 10 when Chicago dropped its football program (despite producing the first Heisman trophy winner) because of the adverse affect it was having on its academic mission.

No biggie: I read it as Northwestern the first time, as well. Someone ought to give them a ton of money so they can rename the school to avoid any confusion with that place in Evanston. How about Soros University?

It’s too bad that many sports were sacrificed to keep this football program going. ‘Whatta ya think’ think they will be ‘brave enough’ to bring back discontinued sports?

@napolitano – just checking to be sure there isn’t confusion between Northwestern, the Big 10 school, and Northeastern, the one that is currently discontinuing its football program.

@varnerhall – Oops. I read it too quickly. Anyway, good for Northeastern.
