Former Texas Tech Football Coach Loses Appeal at State Supreme Court

February 17, 2012, 1:24 pm

The Texas Supreme Court has denied an appeal by the former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach in a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the university, the Associated Press reports. The ruling comes more than two years after the university fired the coach over allegations that he had mistreated a player, and a year after an appeals court ruled Texas Tech was largely immune to the lawsuit. The coach has denied the allegations and asserted his dismissal was related to an $800,000 bonus he was due the day after his firing. Mr. Leach was recently hired to coach at Washington State University.

And, of course, the fact that Craig James, the father of the student involved, is running for the Republican nomination for a US Senate seat from Texas has nothing to do with this whatsoever.

The coach must have done something extremely valuable with long-term positive impact on society to be due an $800,000 bonus!  Did he cure the common cold?

Yes, Mike Leach did something extremely valuable: he won football games where it isn’t easy to win football games, he created an exciting offense, he filled the Texas Tech football stadium and generated revenues many times over his salary.
