In a Wall Street Journal opinion article published today, Henry Bienen, president emeritus of Northwestern University, defended for-profit colleges for educating traditionally underserved groups. “Those who argue that for-profits drain public resources are ignoring parts of the story,” he wrote. Mr. Bienen is now the vice chairman of the board of Rasmussen Inc., a for-profit college based in Illinois.

Wow!…until you read down to the last sentence: “Mr. Bienen is now the vice chairman of the board of Rasmussen Inc., a for-profit college based in Illinois.”So why wasn’t the headline, “For-profit Board Vice-Chairman Defends For-Profit Sector,” and the last sentence in the story, “Mr. Bienen is president emeritus of Northwestern University”?Put it this way, if a former U.S. Senator took a VP job with, say, JP Morgan, and wrote a WSJ opinion piece defending Wall Street’s practices, would the CHE headline the story, “Former Senator Defends Wall Street”? I think not.Why is the Chronicle trying to disguise a dog-bites-man story as a man-bites-dog story?

I think not.” Of course they would. But then again, since we must follow current fads, we are not allowed to say positive things about “for-profits”. After all, our federal officials (who are only capable of generating deficits) and our executive branch (filled with persons whose careers have been exclusively taxpayer funded) have labelled making a profit as “bad” and “greedy.” Only school whose profits are allowed to be labelled as “endowments” are acceptable.
