Former Football Player Sues NCAA Over Concussion Policies

September 19, 2011, 2:45 pm

A former football player at Eastern Illinois University has filed a federal lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association, arguing that the organization’s policies fail to protect college athletes from concussions, the Associated Press reports. Adrian Arrington, who says he suffers from memory loss, depression, and migraines as a result of head injuries he suffered as a college athlete, faults the NCAA for not adopting tougher rules on certain on-the-field plays that are more likely to result in head injuries. The NCAA has strengthened its policies on concussions in recent years as concern over sport-related head injuries has increased, and it now requires colleges to have “concussion-management plans” in place. Mr. Arrington’s lawyer, Joseph Siprut, said that the policies have “no teeth.”

The fact that the NCAA has strengthened those rules seems to open them up for a lawsuit since it appears this player competed before those rules were strengthened. Would love to see someone best the NCAA in a lawsuit.
