Michigan’s Ave Maria College violated state law when it fired an administrator for cooperating with federal investigators looking for student-aid violations, a county jury ruled this week, reports The Detroit News. The college, which has since reopened as Ave Maria University, in Naples, Fla., will have to pay Kay Ernsting, a former director of financial aid, about $418,000 for lost wages plus damages. Ms. Ernsting says she and three other employees were fired for cooperating with Education Department officials who found that the college had misused about $250,000 in student aid. Ave Maria officials have maintained that the firings were related to their decision to shut down the Michigan campus.
