For-Profit Start-Up Buys Nonprofit Patten U.

UniversityNow, the for-profit start-up company that offers competency-based degrees through a venture called New Charter University, announced Monday that it is acquiring Patten University, a regionally accredited, nonprofit four-year institution with a campus in Oakland, Calif. The move will allow New Charter students to transfer to Patten’s online program and earn a degree for about $8,000. Last year, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Patten’s accreditor, placed the university on probation for being “seriously out of compliance” with some of its standards.
