Federal Officials Drop Investigation of Alleged Bias in Student Course Advising

January 13, 2012, 3:29 pm

The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights has halted its investigation of a complaint that an academic-department chairwoman at Barnard College discriminated against a student by steering her away from a course on the basis of her Jewish background. In a letter sent on Wednesday to Barnard, which is affiliated with Columbia University, Emily Frangos, the leader of the investigative team that looked into the matter for the civil-rights office, said the department chair had denied discouraging the Orthodox Jewish student from taking the class based on allegations that the professor would be biased against her. The letter said the office’s investigators were closing the file because they were unable to sort through the conflicting accounts of what was said in the meeting between the department head and the student, and heard no similar allegations of other Jewish students’ being steered away from the class.

    Barnard College is ranked 2039 our of 2890 universities in America. That is about the bottom 25 percentile and it does not have regional accreditation.    One might ask why a prestigious university such as Columbia is associated with a women’s college which appears to offer little but Jewish studies.  Name the teacher who might be discriminatory against the poor little Orthodox Jew and name the course from which the young lady was steered away.  Unless the accuser can provide specific incidents and previous complaints of the unnamed alleged BIGOT, I suggest a thorough investigation of Ms. Rachel McDermott’s motivations for telling what appear to be lies and rumors.   To the dear student who has been dragged into this quagmire, I suggest you run for the hills and and find a university that does not destroy peoples lives because of  dirty little liars.

    I demand that universities following below the bottom 25 percentile, have no accreditation, brainwash students, and offer no/few academic programs useful to job fulfillment be bulldozed and forgotten as quickly as possible.

    The previous poster’s information regarding Barnard College is false.  I’m not sure what ranking s/he used, but U.S. News ranks Barnard #23 of National Liberal Arts Colleges.  Moreover, the college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and it offers more than 50 majors in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and Sciences.

    Dear Jane Doe:

    Please answer the original questions and stop evading the subject.

    Please, also  refer to only legitimate ranking sources and not regional rankings.  For example, the best party school in the region, as rated by U.S. News, does not count toward academic status.  Use  webometrics as a legitimate source for ranking.  According to Barnard’s own website they have *applied* for Middle SACS (lowest of the low) ranking, but to do expect to receive it for several years.  It has only been in the last few months that they received a preliminary meeting.
    1) There are 2890 universities/ colleges in America  Barnard ranks 2039.  That is the bottom of the barrel.
    2)  What proof do you offer that Barnard *College* has MSACS accreditation when their website says they do not.
    3) Crime on campus:  forcible sex offenses = 13
                                    burglary = 22
                                    alcohol abuse 367
                                    drug abuse 64
    4) Regarding crime, most know that few crimes are reported and even fewer are caught.
    5) Regarding total student enrollment, the website provided no information that I could find.  Perhaps you can answer that question.

    Most importantly, I demand that you answer the questions raised above about  bigotry, false accusations and the tormenting of that professor and poor little girl.  It appears that not only is Barnard’s academic ranking in the bottom percentile, but so are the morals.

    (Does 609zr still operate on dial-up?)

    A couple of clicks on Google will give 609zr the history of Columbia University and Barnard College and disabuse him/her of the notion that it’s a bottom-quartile school with little but a Jewish Studies major. The school recently ranked in the mid-20s among SLACs and benefits greatly from being part of an Ivy League university in Manhattan. In short, Barnard is a very good school. (Where does 609zr get his/her info?)

    As for crime, for instance, those numbers seem pretty low, especially for (I presume), an academic year. “Forcible sex offenses” sounds like a blanket for a lot of misdeeds, including, say harrassment. Only sixty-four instances of “drug abuse”? Does that include being caught with a joint? Wow. And your typical Big Ten university has four hundred instances of alcohol abuse every Tuesday, during semester break.

    Chairwomen = Rachel McDermott
    Professor = Joseph Massad
    Perceived problem = long, outstanding battle between Jews and Muslims at Barnard College

    http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2012/01/13/federal-investigation-finds-no-discrimination-barnard

    As usual, the CHE has failed to disclose the dirty little details behind the story.  Perhaps both of the professors should be fired, or for a real life study abroad experience, they can move the campus to Israel.

    What, exactly, is 609zr’s problem (other than thinking that “long, outstanding” means “longstanding”)?

    A student made a complaint, through an anti-anti-Semitism organization at Columbia, alleging that she was “steered” away from a particular course because of her being an Orthodox Jew.  The DOE’s Office of Civil Rights has investigaged the complaint and decided that there’s not enough evidence (no other Jewish students alleged being “steered”) in this she-said/she-said matter to find against the chair. The director of the Initiative on Anti-Semitism is considering an appeal, and if he can come up with more substantial evidence, perhaps the OCR will reverse itself. This seems to me–both in the brief CHE story and the fuller account in the Columbia student paper–a rather fair and careful handling of the situation. Where’s the scandal 609zr seems to be implying lurks beneath the surface?

    As anyone in higher education knows, colleges and universities must be re-accredited on a regular basis.  Barnard College is apparently in that process, hence the reference on the website to the Self-Study.  According to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Barnard has been accredited by that body since 1921 and is currently accredited.

    One can only wonder what ax 609zr has to grind with Barnard.  His/her postings seem more a personal diatribe than reasoned commentary.

    What a bizarre and factually challenged statement.  Barnard is ranked in the top 50 liberal arts colleges in America and is fully accredited.  It offers majors in over 50 different disciplines, and regularly approves special majors in several more.  And Columbia is associated with it because for the first 230 years of its existence, Columbia was unwilling to educate women alongside men.
