The union for non-tenure-track faculty members at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, in a document posted on its Web site, says it plans to file a grievance in response to word that campus administrators notified nearly 80 faculty members that their full-time workloads would be reduced in the coming semester. The union and the university are in negotiations about how to handle the institution’s major budget challenges, and furlough days and a 3.5-percent pay cut, among other proposals, are under consideration.

Why don’t they just do what the SUNY faculty in New york did? Amidst the $600+ million reduction to SUNY, the UUP took a pay raise while more junior members of their own union had contracts non-renewed. Kind of like eating your young.

There are precious few ways of obtaining Europe-wide aid partly because the potential drawback is increased accountability, which would inevitably lead to more education cuts by countries. Additionally, globally-focused institutions – including Warwick – are exporting more of their higher education services. This works well for revenue, but receiving countries are scrutinizing global credentials. Part of the answer is a stronger global accreditation and assessment model, beyond the disparate systems that exist.
