Environmental Coalition Urges Limits on Synthetic Biology

A coalition of 111 environmental and policy groups are calling for greater oversight of the field of synthetic biology. Many university researchers see synthetic biology as the use of sophisticated new gene-altering techniques to make better medicines, fuels, and renewable materials. But the coalition, led by Friends of the Earth, said it sees a series of economic, social, and ethical challenges, and on Tuesday it called for a moratorium on the release and commercial use of synthetic organisms and other products of synthetic biology until new regulatory protections are in place.
