Education Dept. Dismisses Complaint About College’s Sexuality Course

January 31, 2012, 12:46 pm

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has dismissed a student’s complaint about a human-sexuality course at Western Nevada College, the Associated Press reports. In the complaint, filed in November, Karen Royce, 60, said assignments in the course were inappropriate, asking her and other students to masturbate and keep journals about their sex lives. The university said Ms. Royce had received ample warning about the assignments in the class, which was typical of human-sexuality courses. The Education Department said it was satisfied with the college’s investigation of the dispute and deferred to the college to make decisions about the course.

Our society is full of people wanting to be offended.  Many of them seek out experiences that they anticipate will be offensive so they can have something to complain about, instead of just keeping their noses out of it.

And she took this course for what reason???

She may have known what a set of creeps call themselves teachers but she may have felt that someone in the whole community might agree with her that this was “out of place”, stupid and certainly not anything that a rational person would call academic.

Of course some would call anything that explores anything could be call education. Maybe they might try teaching how people feel and keep a diary about it while they beat up people or …more.

No our society is not filled with people who want to be offended and it is is too damn bad that it isn’t,

I hope that one of the reasons she took this course is to be able to point out to our Federal Government that there are still people who take offense that this kind of a stupid, inane course would be offered and credit given towards a state college degree.

I can think of a lot of reasons why someone may be interested in a course on human sexuality. When I take a criminal justice course I don’t expect my assignments would entail committing crimes or even actively trying to prevent them in my neighborhood. When I take a course on alcoholism I don’t expect to have to recount either my personal history or try new drinks as a requirement. While people may and are often encouraged to be personally involved in their learning, the goal of a human sexuality class should not be merely exploring the students’ most intimate secrets or to require them to perform any kind of sexual act and report on it.

Since this is at a State University, my tax money is being wasted on this crap.  If this had been a for-profit school, the politicians would be screaming about the waste and that the students were being “screwed.”  Where are these politicians now?  My sex life is between my wife and me.  Everyone else can just speculate and wonder.

I am the woman that filed this complaint. I had no warning this class was about writing about your sex history and experiences for the professors reading enjoyment. The real problem here is that WNC misrepresents the class. The bigger problem is a public college administration endorsing a class that requires you to tell the instructor your oral sex practices, describe your orgams, mandatory masturbation assignments. A reasonable person must question the academic value and why does a professor of a community college have the right to demand disclosure from every student the entire nature of all their sexual experiences. I am paying for my education. They misrepresented the academic content and I was cheated. They need to change the course description to learning to write porn, use sex toys, and be exploited for personal sexual information.
Did you know the American Psychological  Association that accredits PHD progams at the best universities in the US has specific standards. They are ” a professor can NEVER inquire about a students sexual experiences , family, significant others, in writing or orally”. If a PHD program prohibits this, why can a community college part-time faculty perv get away with it?
