States are getting more time to meet the requirements of the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, a $54-billion slice of the 2009 federal stimulus legislation meant to shore up spending on public schools and colleges. In receiving that money, states agreed to collect and report data on various criteria, including the number of students who enrolled in college and how many needed remedial education. But most states were not able to meet a September 30 deadline to submit the data, so the department is giving them until the end of January to meet that requirement.
