Eastern Michigan U. Board Approves First Contract for Part-Time Faculty

September 22, 2011, 3:43 pm

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents has approved that institution’s first-ever contract with its part-time faculty members, reports the online news publication AnnArbor.com.  The new contract was approved by the board Tuesday after being ratified by the adjunct bargaining unit of the EMU Federation of Teachers last week. It creates an official pay scale that increases some part-time lecturers’ pay per credit hour from $600 to at least $1,125, and rewards longevity by giving veteran part-time faculty members additional job security and up to $400 extra per semester, depending on how long they have taught at the institution, the online publication reports. Part-time faculty members voted to join the union in the summer of 2010.

Very impressive!  They negotiated a terrific credit-hour salary increase (contingent faculty on our top step earn $3114 for a three-credit course) so they should be proud!!!
