Duke University and Mike Pressler, the former lacrosse coach who was forced out in 2006 amid the scandal that followed a dancer’s false allegations against three players, have settled a lawsuit filed by Mr. Pressler, The News & Observer reported. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Mr. Pressler, who now coaches at Bryant University, in Rhode Island, sued Duke in 2007, alleging that it had violated agreements with him by making disparaging remarks about him.

It is difficult for me to wish for anything but failure for Duke after this mess and the manner in which the administration and faculty handled the case. The facts didn’t matter. The same mentality has been apparent during the health care debate. Never mind that even those with the most basic understanding of economics can see that it will likely bankrupt the country and harm the health care delivery sytem for all over time — it makes some feel good to think they are on the right side. Go West Virginia.

While Duke’s administration certainly mishandled this case, the lacrosse players themselves were hardly paragons of moral virtue.

I understand the complex issues that evolved from the false allegations, from people jumping to conclusions, etc. However, my understanding is that the coach new that his team was holding team events that involved underage alcohol consumption and strippers. In my book, that gets a coach fired in any sport at any campus.

gasten, your attempt to link this to the health care debate is quite a prank. Happy April 1 back @ ya!
