A would-be donor withdrew a $1-million gift to Kent State University’s athletics program last week after the student newspaper raised questions about the donor’s alleged role in a multimillion-dollar financial fraud more than a decade ago, according to The Plain Dealer, a newspaper in Cleveland. The donor, Jason M. Cope, was to be recognized by the naming of the Ohio university’s basketball court in his honor, but on Friday, hours before the dedication ceremony, Kent State announced that Mr. Cope had pulled the money. The student paper, The Daily Kent Stater, had published an article that day detailing how Mr. Cope, a Kent State alumnus, and other defendants had been accused of fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission and later had been ordered by a court to pay $19-million in penalties. Mr. Cope denied the accusation, but was unable to be reached for comment by either newspaper. University officials refused to say why Mr. Cope had withdrawn the gift.
