The direct-loan program, under which the Education Department provides education loans directly to students through their colleges, saw a 13-percentage-point gain in market share over the past year, according to an analysis by the Student Lending Analytics blog. The growth, from 29 to 42 percent of federal student-loan volume, comes amid Congressional debate over legislation to end the rival guaranteed-loan program.

It also comes amid increasing pressure from ED to get on board, touting the inevitability of the elimination of the FFEL program. “Gain” seems to suggest the increase is based on the relative merits of the program, and this is hardly that.
