A dean at the University of Jordan who taught a course on feminist theory has been removed from her post over a video her students produced that calls attention to sexual harassment on the Middle Eastern university’s campus, according to Jadaliyya, an electronic magazine produced by the Arab Studies Institute. The dean, Rula Quawas, was reportedly dismissed last month amid a controversy that followed the video’s posting online. University officials were reportedly concerned that the video harmed the university’s reputation, though Ms. Quawas defended the students’ film. Fred M. Donner, president of the Middle East Studies Association, protested Ms. Quawas’s ouster in a letter last week to the university’s president, calling the move “a serious violation of academic freedom.”
