CUNY Trustees, in a Reversal, Approve an Honorary Degree for Tony Kushner

May 9, 2011, 10:23 pm

In a vote tonight, the executive committee of the City University of New York’s Board of Trustees approved an honorary degree for the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, reversing last week’s widely criticized decision to withhold the honor, The New York Times reported. It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Kushner would accept the degree, which would be conferred by CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Well, that was a quick tempest in a teapot. Tony Kushner is owed an apology, and the board member who applied the anti-Kushner pressure should resign.

    To plunkett:
No pressure was exerted. One trustee voiced an opinion and others agreed, so that the proposal to honor Kushner fell short by several votes. Or do believe that trustees should rubber stamp every proposal?

If we’re right, it may augur well for all education if children get that early enthusiasm for manipulating objects and ideas.  The real impediment to learning is what happens or doesn’t happen in the home before the age of three.  At least that’s my personal guess. (I’ve had eleven children of my own). Most taught themselves at home.

Great news and I hope this will inspire other institutes to do the same.
