John G. Rocovich, a controversial former member of Virginia Tech’s governing board, has been reappointed after a five-year hiatus. Mr. Rocovich served on the Board of Visitors from 1997 to 2005, and was its rector from 2002 to 2004. As rector he was embroiled in controversies regarding policy changes he led, including attempts to ban affirmative action at Virginia Tech and remove protections for gay and lesbian students and faculty members, both of which the board ultimately reversed. Mr. Rocovich’s board also rescinded a job offer in 2002 to the lesbian partner of a new graduate dean, a decision that led to protests on the campus, and made an unsuccessful attempt to prohibit political speech on the campus.

That’s what happens when right-wing extremists are elected to political office. We can be sure that Mr. Rocovich will make trouble, whether he succeeds with his proposals or not.

I agree…I forsee more much trouble and many sad days ahead for Virginia Tech, as well as for the Univ. of Virginia and William and Mary.

Oh Virginia – what will it be? Move into a made up conservative past or a progressive future?
