A political-science course on gay marriage is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at Seton Hall University, a Roman Catholic institution in New Jersey, despite objections from the archbishop of Newark, The Star-Ledger reported. The course’s instructor is W. King Mott, an associate professor who is openly gay and has previously challenged the Catholic Church’s position on homosexuality. Members of the university’s Board of Regents met in the spring to discuss canceling the course after Archbishop John J. Myers, chairman of Seton Hall’s Board of Trustees and president of its Board of Regents, called the course’s message “contrary to what the Church teaches” in a statement.

“Contrary to what the Church teaches”: would those teachings include protecting priests who are murderous bombers or preying pedophiles? The former: In 1972, Father James Chesney participated in a bombing that killed nine people ranging from an 8-year old girl to a 65 year-old man. Shown police evidence, Cardinal William Conway promptly transferred Chesney from Ireland to the Irish Republic – beyond local police jurisdiction. (From The Economist, today[8/26/20]): “The church has offered lengthy commentaries and expressions of regret but no apology. Perhaps, with a papal visit to Britain next month overshadowed by paedophile scandals, it is wary of drawing attention to the similarity in how both situations were handled: perpetrators were bundled away rather than confronted.”(http://www.economist.com/node/16889684?story_id=16889684&fsrc=rss)Or maybe the teaching’s include permitting and protecting “rape and sexual molestation” of thousands of boys and girls for decades in Ireland’s church-run industrial schools and orphanages?(Google “The Ryan Report”)To society, Gay Marriage, to judge by the Church’s prompt and public condemnation, is so obviously a greater threat than either murder and sodomy.

princeton67: While I take no issue with either the substance or sentiment of your comment, one matter confuses me. You write “Cardinal William Conway promptly transferred Chesney from Ireland to the Irish Republic – beyond local police jurisdiction. .” Ireland *is* the Irish Republic. Perhaps you mean Northern Ireland at some point? Northern Ireland, as a part of the United Kingdom, is,of course, a separate country from Ireland, or as it is formally known, The Republic of Ireland.
