Metropolitan State University of Denver is moving forward with a controversial new tuition rate for illegal-immigrant students, The Denver Post reported. The university drew criticism soon after announcing the plan, under which some Colorado residents who are illegal immigrants would pay more than in-state students but less than the out-of-state rate they now pay. Colorado legislators in recent years have repeatedly defeated legislation that would allow some illegal immigrants to pay tuition lower than nonresident rates at state colleges and universities. Terrance Carroll, a Metropolitan State trustee, said on Friday that the university was confident its plan could withstand legal challenges. “We’re not looking for a fight,” said Mr. Carroll, who is a former speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives and a Democrat, “but we are certainly willing and able to defend our decision.”
