Colleges Give Students With Poor Grades a Second Chance at a Degree

September 7, 2010, 11:54 am

Several two- and four-year colleges in the Philadelphia area are luring back dropouts through grade-forgiveness programs, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today. The programs come amid a national push, especially by the Obama administration, to persuade former students to complete their degrees.

Sounds like a great idea!

This is why America is becoming a mediocre nation. Not everyone should be in college. The truth is some can’t measure up, so they should find an alternative. Let those who are motivated to learn and capable of handling college-level work enter and give them opportunities to stretch themselves. After all, it will be these people who will keep America in the lead.

It isn’t always “measure up”. Lack of maturity at 17 or 18… dire family issues (death in family, loss of parental job, divorce, etc.) as well as many other issues. Maturity and time have a way of dealing with these issues and for the students who earned poor grades as a result, a second chance is warranted.

Many schools have a forgiveness program where the student can “wipe clean” his/her academic records. Many times students grow up and want to come back to complete their degree and can show that they are now ready the way they weren’t when they were 18 and stupid (and we all were stupid at 18!). My institution doesn’t highly advertise this program but it’s been out there for years as an option for those who really have matured.
