College Suspends 4 Professors a Day After Protest of Course Cancellations

Southwestern College, a two-year institution in Chula Vista, Calif., suspended four faculty members on Friday, one day after a rally was held on the campus to protest course cancellations for next semester, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The faculty members, who include the current and former presidents of the faculty union, said the suspensions were in retaliation for their criticism of college administrators. The college issued a short statement saying it was investigating a personnel matter unrelated to the protest.

  1. Or did they commit the sin of not being cheerful in the face of disinvestment in the education of our youth and our future?

  2. So the First Amendment right to assembly and petition is not recognized by the college administration. . . .

  3. Freedom of speech seems to not be acknowledged on campus anymore. I was at the meeeting on Oct 14 2009 and they dont recognize the students. They excluded a good 500, at least, and they will continue to ignore us. I am a student and will not stand for this ingnorance. They need to stop balancing the budgets on the back of the students and start finding ways to fix this; Proffesor Lopez has a solution. However, he is not being recognized anymore since the administration decided to “suspend” him. I am one of the few thousand students at Southwestern College with a voice that needs to be heard. I not only fight for my future but for the future of the next generation of students behind me.
