Michael E. Mann, the professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University whose research on global warming has been the target of several investigations pushed by conservative groups seeking to discredit his findings, announced on Tuesday that he is suing the National Review and the Competitive Enterprise Institute for defamation. The complaint, filed on Monday in the District of Columbia Superior Court, asserts that the defendants defamed him by accusing him of academic fraud and comparing him to Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State football coach who was convicted of child sex abuse. A lawyer for the defendants told the Legal Times that Mr. Mann’s lawsuit was “without merit.”
