Two years as provost of Columbia University have proved to be enough for Claude M. Steele, the prominent social-psychology scholar, who will be returning to Stanford University in September as dean of its School of Education, the university says. Mr. Steele was a member of the Stanford faculty from 1991 to 2009, when he decamped for Columbia.
