Chancellor Seeks to Delay Santa Monica College’s 2-Tier Pricing Plan

(Updated, 11:33 p.m., 4/5/2012) Santa Monica College’s board has called a special meeting for Friday morning to consider a request by Jack Scott, chancellor of the California Community Colleges system, for the college to postpone putting into effect its plan to charge higher prices for some core courses that are in high demand, the Santa Monica Dispatch reported. The chancellor’s request came a day after some students protesting the plan were pepper-sprayed outside a meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees. According to the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Scott said he was worried that some students might be shut out of courses by the new plan, and also that state rules might not permit charging more than the state-approved rate for courses.
